It's a sad day when you figure out how little you really make. Okay, I get about 4.5% on my money market fund (which has a balance of $0, btw). We'll round down to 4 just for simplicity's sake. If I had 1 million dollars to put in that account, I'd be making (4% of $1,000,000) $40,000! That's almost twice as much as I make. If it were a milllion and a half, I'd be rich (comparatively) off just the interest. Now $360 million... I can't even think about it. So all someone has to do is give me 1 million dollars (after taxes), then I can quit my job and live happily ever after.

As most of you have probably heard, I was arrested before the State of the Union Address tonight.

I am speechless with fury at what happened and with grief over what we have lost in our country.

There have been lies from the police and distortions by the press. (Shocker) So this is what really happened:

This afternoon at the People's State of the Union Address in DC where I was joined by Congresspersons Lynn Woolsey and John Conyers, Ann Wright, Malik Rahim and John Cavanagh. Lynn brought me a ticket to the State of the Union Address. At that time, I was wearing the shirt that said: 2,245 Dead. How many more?

After the PSOTU press conference, I was having second thoughts about going to the SOTU at the Capitol. I didn't feel comfortable going. I knew George Bush would say things that would hurt me and anger me and I knew that I couldn't disrupt the address because Lynn had given me the ticket and I didn't want to be disruptive out of respect for her. I, in fact, had given the ticket to John Bruhns who is in Iraq Veterans Against the War. However, Lynn's office had already called the media and everyone knew I was going to be there so I sucked it up and went.

I got the ticket back from John, and I met one of Congresswoman Barbara Lee's staffers in the Longworth Congressional Office building and we went to the Capitol via the underground tunnel. I went through security once, then had to use the rest room and went through security again.

My ticket was in the 5th gallery, front row, fourth seat in. The person who in a few minutes was to arrest me, helped me to my seat.

I had just sat down and I was warm from climbing 3 flights of stairs back up from the bathroom so I unzipped my jacket. I turned to the right to take my left arm out, when the same officer saw my shirt and yelled, 'Protester.' He then ran over to me, hauled me out of my seat and roughly (with my hands behind my back) shoved me up the stairs. I said something like, 'I'm going, do you have to be so rough?' By the way, his name is Mike Weight.

The officer ran with me to the elevators yelling at everyone to move out of the way. When we got to the elevators, he cuffed me and took me outside to await a squad car. On the way out, someone behind me said, 'That's Cindy Sheehan.' At which point the officer who arrested me said, 'Take these steps slowly.' I said, 'You didn't care about being careful when you were dragging me up the other steps.' He said, 'That's because you were protesting.' Wow, I get hauled out of the People's House because I was, 'Protesting.'

I was never told that I couldn't wear that shirt into the Congress. I was never asked to take it off or zip my jacket back up. If I had been asked to do any of those things...I would have, and written about the suppression of my freedom of speech later. I was immediately, and roughly (I have the bruises and muscle spasms to prove it) hauled off and arrested for 'unlawful conduct.'

After I had my personal items inventoried and my fingers printed, a nice Sgt. came in and looked at my shirt and said, '2,245, huh? I just got back from there.'

I told him that my son died there. That's when the enormity of my loss hit me. I have lost my son. I have lost my First Amendment rights. I have lost the country that I love. Where did America go? I started crying in pain.

What did Casey die for? What did the 2,244 other brave young Americans die for? What are tens of thousands of them over there in harm's way for still? For this? I can't even wear a shirt that has the number of troops on it that George Bush and his arrogant and ignorant policies are responsible for killing.

I wore the shirt to make a statement. The press knew I was going to be there and I thought every once in awhile they would show me and I would have the shirt on. I did not wear it to be disruptive, or I would have unzipped my jacket during George's speech. If I had any idea what happens to people who wear shirts that make the neocons uncomfortable...that I would be arrested...maybe I would have, but I didn't.

There have already been many wild stories out there.

I have some lawyers looking into filing a First Amendment lawsuit against the government for what happened tonight. I will file it. It is time to take our freedoms and our country back.

I don't want to live in a country that prohibits any person, whether he/she has paid the ultimate price for that country, from wearing, saying, writing, or telephoning any negative statements about the government. That's why I am going to take my freedoms and liberties back. That's why I am not going to let Bushco take anything else away from me...or you.

I am so appreciative of the couple of hundred protesters who came to the jail while I was locked up to show their support....we have so much potential for good...there is so much good in so many people.

Four hours and 2 jails after I was arrested, I was let out. Again, I am so upset and sore it is hard to think straight.

Keep up the struggle...I promise you I will too.

FedoraForum.org - Lexmark z605 printer driver problem: "I successfully got the Lexmark Z605 to run under Fedora Core 3 on a Toshiba Satellite A65-S1070 via USB cable.

If you don't have the same FC release as I do, or different hardware, your mileage may vary.

Here are the step I took after reading this thread and the thread at Linuxprinting.org.

1. I made sure my cups and cups libs packages were up to date. Current versions are: cups 1:1.1.22-0.rc1.8.5.i386 and cups-libs 1:1.1.22-0.rc1.8.5.i386.

2. I downloaded the driver from Lexmark http://downloads.lexmark.com/cgi-pe...me=&fileID=1151 .

3. mkdir lexmark (creating a temporary directory to untar the driver file in).

4. mv CJLZ600LE-CUPS-1.0-1.TAR.gz lexmark/

5. cd lexmark

6. tar -zxvf CJLZ600LE-CUPS-1.0-1.TAR.gz (this will leave you with the original tar.gz file in your directory along with COPYING, README and z600cups-1.0-1.gz.sh).

7. sh ./z600cups-1.0-1.gz.sh -keep (this will create a subdirectory called 'installer' .. ignore the errors you see!)

8. cd installer/

9. su , then enter your password. up until this point your havn't been working as root .. right??

10. rpm -i --nodeps z600llpddk-2.0-1.i386.rpm

11. rpm -i z600cups-1.0-1.i386.rpm

12. Browse to the CUPS web interface, http://localhost:631/ .

13. Click on 'Printers'

14. Click on 'Add Printer'

15. Follow the self explanatory dialogues to set up your printer. Within a minute you should be printing a test page.

If something goes wrong, make sure you followed all of these steps in the exact order I did them.

Sorry, this isn't really for you. It took me forever to find out how to make something work, and I don't want to lose it, so I'm going to post it here. If you're curious, it's how to make a Trident CyberBlade video card work with Fedora Linux.

this works for me:

-install in text mode
-once installed, restart, at boot enter grub configuation and append the folowing commands to the kernel line: vga=791 3
-boot
-/boot/grub/grub.conf must be changed to start always with framebuffer enabled

You guys already know that I've been working on a novel entitled Memoirs of the Crimson Dwarf. It's the autobiography of a dwarf who lives in a land called Elysia, which is the world that PRO, Pittsburgh's NERO chapter, takes place.

Here's the first part in PDF format, including the preface and first chapter. This is how it will look, I think, when I publish it. Most of you have read this chapter in some form or other, but here it is for you again. I'll post more of it later, so I wanted you guys to read this first chapter again to refresh you memory or to see the changes I've made. I think it's about in its finished form now, this first chapter, anyway, but suggestions will be gratefully considered. I'll post chapter 2, maybe 2 and 3, another day.

So I failed to live up to my promise. I have 1 comic drawn, but it's not very good, so I don't even feel like putting it up. I need to find time to draw. It's a great stress-reliever. Unfortunately, the price on time is higher even than the price on gas these days. And I'm so stressed out and depressed I just want to sit around and veg. That's bad. I hate when I get like that. Maybe I'll go draw right now... if only I can think of an idea...

The only similarity is that he's a gamer that wants to start a LARP. He's named John, after my favorite gamer cartoonist, John Kovalic (Livejournal: muskrat_john), the artist behind DorkTower. If he was kind enough to name his main character after me--without ever meeting me or hearing of me--well, then, I can repay the favor.

His friend's name is Max. I don't know why.

A new business idea from Katy + Matt: Cirque du les Hommes

Picture this:

You walk into a large circus tent. Spotlight on Eric wearing circus ringmaster outfit.

"Ladies, I ask you to join us on a journey to the far reaches of your wildest dreams. We have traveled to the four corners of West Virginia to find the hottest hunks you have ever seen, here to fulfill all of your fantasies, and to bring you La Cirque du les Hommes."

The sound of tribal drums fills the air as four men carry out a large cage. Inside the cage is a ferocious-looking Steve V., wearing a leopard-print thong, and a lion-like Aaron H. They dance (dance choreographed by Amie), enticing the women with their growls. Lights go up and reveal the drums are played by James W., wearing African war-paint and a loin-cloth. The drum he plays is strategically placed over his crotch. Eric's voice comes over the speaker.

"Allow me to present to you the most drool-worthy lion-tamer in the world, Marc of the Beasts!"

Mark F. comes out, also dressed in a loin cloth and tribal paint. Using a whip, he tames the lions and teaches them to give lap-dances to the audience. Trent runs across the stage, wearing a leopard-print vest.

Next act: "Everybody make sure you get a mug of grog, because it's a pirate's life for you!" A techno version of Yo ho! It's a Pirate's Life for Me starts playing. Taylor and Dan (Byers) come out in pirate outfits. They end up in thongs and pirate hats. "Ladies, be careful, or you might get hooked!"

Next: "Presenting Adam the Elephant, known far and wide for his long trunk." Hot, hot, hot! starts playing and Adam comes in, doing his strip fire-eating act, taking off more and more as the fire makes him hotter and hotter.

"Get ready for some horsin' around, Ladies!" John C., Sam, and Aaron W. come out on horseback, dressed as cowboys. They make their horses dance in a line as Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy plays. Then they hop off and do a strip line dance, roping audience members with their lassos. They end in chaps, hats, and thongs, with pistols at their sides.

Then, all the guys come out and do their signature finishing piece (also choreographed by Amie), lip-syncing to Hakuna Matata. They end up in leopard-print thongs for just a moment before black-out.

We're still auditioning for the pink poodles in tu-tus. We could also do "Salute to the South", featuring guys in rebel flag thongs.

The Seventh Gate of Hell

So, I'm going to be teaching 7th grade English this year. It really is quite a feat, getting into this job, and I owe so much to Lady Luck. All over the state, they are laying off teachers, but somehow I (the guy with no experience who just graduated in May) managed to slide into this position before somebody with more experience applied. Mike D. and I are they only ones from our grad. class to get hired in the school system, and we were the ones who student-taught with the green team at the middle school. Hrmm... coincidence? heh.

I'm going to be on the purple team this year, so I guess people will have to buy me purple ties and purple shirts.

Wish me luck. She's held out for me so far, but her favor might be failing; I've hurt myself several times today, once by falling up the stairs (yes, "falling up"; don't act like you've never fallen up stairs) and a few times by banging my leg or elbow against something.

Katy made me watch the show "My Super Sweet 16" on MTV last night. God, such a display of upper class snobbery and wastefulness. This girl's mother spent over $100,000 on her 16th birthday party! A hundred thousand dollars just wasted for one night. She could have donated that money, held a charity fund-raising party, or given a grant to an artist or scientist! It makes me want to become a communist, but not a communist as you usually think of them (especially the ineffective ones we have in America that just talk about how they wish it was possible). It makes me want to be Robin Hood and snatch that hundred thousand from that woman before she can waste it. So, if I ever turn to a life of crime, you'll know that I'm pirating from the rich to give to the poor. God, it makes me sick.

On a not quite entirely separate note, have you seen that show "Laguna Beach"? They claim it's a reality show, that they just follow the kids around. If it is, it's masterfully done. Great camera shots, great production. If it's fake, as I insist it must be, it is also masterfully done. The kids act more real than the people on the "Real World". It could be fake. All they say at the beginning is: "The people are real; the places are real; and the drama is real." Actors are real people, too. (Well, maybe not. Did you ever eat with one?) They just don't change the names of the places they go. And it's the sort of drama that could definitely happen in some rich kid's life, so maybe it's based on true stories. And there is crazy product placement in that show, which makes me think it's fake. (They blurr out addresses and liscence plates, but not a big giant bag of Doritos that just happens to be completely turned towards the camera. Please!)

It was just too much modernity for one night.

Katy says it's way easier to just read something rather than listen to a file. She's right (as she always is). So, I might post a few more as I figure out how to work this, but after that, I'll only post radio-style shows. So, blog on.

Captain Moody takes a trip to Sandbridge Beach, VA, and returns with a ring on his finger. Better quality, using a Belkin mic for the iPod, but there's some strange mechanical sound... will have to figure out how to minimize or get rid of that.

Well, we're heading off to the beach tomorrow. Ahhh, Sandbridge... relaxation, kyaking, and fun in the sun. And that means NO BLOGGING... at least for a week. I'll make some Ologs, though, and upload them when we get back, plus lots of pics. The next time most of you see me, I'll be married! How about that? I won't bore you guys with a bunch of mushy stuff, but I love Katy and I can't wait!

I might switch to mp3 or ogg vorbis, or I might just try a better quality aiff. This one is 12 megs, though...

So this is the beginning of my new blog. I like blogger, and it gives me so many options. There is just one failing, the friends features of livejournal are not here, so I'll have to keep my lj acct. for that. Anyway, I'm really using this as a vehicle for my "Olog" (short for AudiOlog or RadiOlog), which is sort of an audio blog. So, if you have iTunes, you can subscribe to my Olog as a podcast. Isn't it great? I can invade every part of your life. Actually, it's sort of an outlet for my need to do radio. Alternatively, if you don't have iTunes or a great Podcast program, you are silly. But if you are silly, you can click the link each week and listen to my Olog that way.
